Just a Carrier

As I paper carrier, I receive varied responses. Some appreciate receiving their morning paper before seven a.m. and gift me with tips and cards. Others take it all for granted, reading the morning news without a thought as to how it arrived on their doorstep. Does it really matter who I am? Is it not the paper itself that is of value? I am just the carrier of the good and bad news of the day.

If I did the job for the pay, it would not be worth the early morning rise. If I did the job for personal acclaim, it would not be worth being so insignificant. Yet the time to think and muse, the space to reflect and problem solve, the quiet to pray and plan recharges my inner battery. By the time I finish, I feel ready to head into a busy day; ready to deal with difficult children and solve problems.

As I go through my daily routines, I continue to be just a carrier. What of value am I carrying to others? What am I delivering through my relationships? This Christmas, I'm pondering the "glory" of heaven that came to earth as a baby. I'm finding myself looking for evidence of God's glory in situations, people and the music of the season.

The shepherds first had to experience "the glory of the Lord" that "shone round about them", then they could go see for themselves and their hearts were changed. "The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.” The glory they had experienced became deflected back through their own words to God himself.

Am I close enough to see any "glory"? Do I make time to connect with my creator and read his words to me? Do I talk to him throughout the day about ordinary things? Do I see him show up in unique and personal ways? When I first experience God's glory, then I will have something of value to carry to others.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

So today I remain content to just be a carrier. My prayer is that I will be able to carry and reflect the light of God's glory throughout each busy day.
